A mowkib is, before anything else, an act of remembrance. Before it is food and drink, before shelter and care, it exists to keep alive the memory of Ahl al-Bayt. It can be a group — or even a single person — devoted to serving the majālis of ʿaza. الموكب، قبل كلِّ شيء، فِعلُ ذِكرٍ وإحياء. قبل أن يكون طعاماً وشراباً، وقبل المأوى والرعاية، إنما وُجِد لِيُبقِيَ ذكر أهل البيت عليهم السلام حيّاً. وقد يكون جماعةً — بل حتى شخصاً واحداً — وقف نفسه على خدمة مجالس العزاء.

You will not find a mowkib raised for celebration; the mowkib belongs to mourning. The service it offers — the meal pressed into a traveller’s hands, the place to rest, the cup of water — is remembrance made into action. To serve the mourners of Husayn is itself a way of mourning him. لن تجد موكباً يُرفَع للاحتفال؛ فالموكب لِلحزن والعزاء. والخدمة التي يُقدّمها — اللقمة تُوضَع في يد المسافر، والمكان للراحة، وشربة الماء — إنما هي ذِكرٌ تحوّل إلى عمل. وخدمةُ عزاء الحسين هي بذاتها نوعٌ من عزائه.

For centuries, mowkibs have lined the routes of the pilgrims — from the edges of cities to the long roads that lead to Karbala — asking nothing, turning no one away. Today tens of thousands of them stand across the world, each a small light kept burning in the name of Husayn. منذ قرون، تصطفُّ المواكب على دروب الزائرين — من أطراف المدن إلى الطرق الطويلة المؤدّية إلى كربلاء — لا تطلب شيئاً، ولا تردُّ أحداً. واليوم تقف عشرات الآلاف منها في أنحاء العالم، كلُّ واحدٍ نورٌ صغيرٌ يُبقى مُشتعلاً باسم الحسين.
